BackYard Boyz – Cardano NFT

A project that will shape a comic book story based on a unanimous community vote.

Have you ever read a comic book featuring your favorite characters, yet the plot or ending was disappointing? Or thought of an alternate universe in which they are more suitable to be in? Well I know the feeling, and I wish that we, as the readers, could influence the writer somehow. But let me introduce to you a NFT project that is here to shape its comic book along with its community and that’s BackYard Boyz.

In particular, BackYard Boyz is a community driven project and gives a lot of emphasis in its community’s opinion. And the community is in charge of choosing the plot of the story. But how exactly will that work? Let me explain. After the conclusion of the minting phase, the team will lay in front of us a series of four possible themes, which probably is the most important vote. And our task is to choose which one we want the comic book to follow.

To illustrate, the plot starts with the following lines:

“Pedro, Rex, Val and Adam come down from the tree house late at night after playing cards and chilling out like any other day of the week. Though this time they see something in front of them…”

So, basically our job is to choose between, a superhero theme, a zombie apocalypse, an alien abduction or a fantasy world. Finally, it is important to note that in order to vote you will need to be a holder of the project’s NFT characters.

BackYard Boyz is led by a single person for the time being and that’s Ben Hodson. Ben also is the artist behind the characters and a very talented individual indeed. Particularly, he is a street and digital artist that goes by the nickname P3nkin, with a vast experience since his teenage years.

To conclude, I would like to note that Ben is very active in the community, be it in Discord or Twitter. Also, he is very happy to join multiple of Twitter spaces and talk about his project. And he has no problem in laying all the information about himself publically for us, the investors.

Discord & Twitter

As far as the community is concerned, I cannot say that it is small, but certainly not a big one as well. However, I guess that with the current numbers, the project can have a successful drop. Additionally, remember my comment from above that Ben is very active in his Discord server? Well, I believe that, this is the reason that we can see a moderate amount of engagement from the community. But in spite of that I believe that more collaborations could help the project grow and additional activities/events to improve the engagement. So basically, more moderators for Discord.

The artwork follows the graffiti style of the artist of course and it’s something quite different from what I am used to in the NFT space. Specifically, Ben uses hard outlines with attention to detail mostly in small parts like logos, writings etc. Furthermore, the collection is a generative one but consists of four main characters, who are going to be the main characters of the comic book as well. Overall, the pieces are unique and original but I would like to see some more details in them.

You can see some examples of the artwork below:

For a one man project, the website looks really cool and it contains all the information about the project and artist. Also, I love how clearly the concept is explained to us with no confusing add-ons. Finally, you will be able to find links to personal social media accounts and a gallery for you to check what you’ll be buying.

The roadmap is nicely displayed and has enough information for you to grasp what the future holds. But certainly I would like to see some timelines (at least quarters) to understand when approximately each plan will take place.

Closing Thoughts

First of all, the project is on the right track in building a name for itself. And that can be seen by all the hard work that Ben is putting. Furthermore, the artwork has a unique style, which for me is very important. But I would like, as I said, to see some more details. Finally, I love how active the artist is and I believe that it’s the main force to keep the community moderately active as well. However, I believe that the project needs some more promotion and possibly more moderators.
